Succession planting can describe two different plans:

  • A short-range forecast helps with a near-term sowing, transplanting, heat, or frost decision and should be rechecked as the date approaches.
  • Soil temperature and local bed conditions describe the place where seeds and roots must establish. Moisture, crusting, shade, wind, drainage, and reflected heat can differ within one ZIP.
  • The seed packet and crop profile provide variety and crop context. Their maturity ranges remain estimates, not guaranteed harvest appointments.

Limits

Maturity days are not exact. Heat, shortening days, pest cycles, transplant stress, and the duration of harvest can make later successions behave differently from the first. A plan that fits on paper may still need to stop when emergence is poor, the bed releases late, or the forecast changes.
