The calculation, one step at a time
Suppose you plan two 10-foot rows, sow one seed every 3 inches, expect 80% germination, and choose a 10% reserve.
- Convert each row to inches: 10 feet × 12 = 120 inches.
- Count complete spacing intervals: 120 inches ÷ 3 inches = 40 planting positions per row.
- Multiply by the number of rows: 40 × 2 = 80 planting positions.
- Adjust for expected germination: 80 ÷ 0.80 = 100 seeds.
- Add the chosen reserve: 100 × 1.10 = 110 seeds.
- Round upward only if the final result contains part of a seed.
In formula form:
Recommended seeds = ceiling(floor(row length ÷ spacing) × row count ÷ germination rate × (1 + reserve rate)).
The calculator floors positions before multiplying because a partial spacing interval is not a complete planned position. It rounds the final recommendation upward because a fraction of a seed cannot be purchased or sown.
Choose inputs deliberately
Use the packet’s sowing spacing, not the mature thinning distance, unless your plan is explicitly to sow at final spacing. University of Illinois Extension crop guidance shows why the distinction matters: recommendations can specify seeds per foot and a different distance after thinning.
Treat expected germination as an input, not a guarantee. University of Minnesota Extension notes that older seed with lower germination may need more than one seed per cell. In an outdoor row, crusting, moisture, temperature, pests, disease, and handling can make field emergence differ from a labeled or home-tested germination rate.
The extra percentage is a visible planning choice for loss, resowing, or handling. It should not be used to hide uncertainty or replace crop-specific sowing directions.

What this number does not tell you
This calculation does not choose a cultivar, packet size, seeding depth, row spacing, planting date, or thinning plan. It also does not use USDA Hardiness Zones, NOAA freeze normals, a weather forecast, or soil temperature; those answer different planning questions.
Limits
Broadcast sowing, hills, seed tapes, multi-seed pellets, mixed beds, precision seeders, and irregular rows need a different method. Packet quantities may be sold by weight instead of count, and actual seed count per packet varies by crop, lot, coating, and supplier. Recheck the label and local Extension guidance before buying or sowing.
